The Age-Old Question

You know what I'm talking about it, you got asked it a million times in high school... "So, what do you want to do? What do you want to do with your life? What kind of a job do you want to get?" You probably asked yourself the same question a million times more than anyone else ever asked it to you.

Did you start college with one major and end with another? I did, and I know I'm really not alone in that, not by far.

And now, I've graduated three times. But with three similar degrees, each one is just a little higher than the last one. And what is it that I want to do with my life?

I know the real answer to that, it's just how do I get there? How do I get to that place? What journey do I need to begin to get to the right road?

I agree with what Emily Dickinson said, "I dwell in possibility." I like thinking about what could be and what might be and where I could go. That's much easier than actually doing anything. And it is much more exciting to think about where things could go rather than try to go somewhere and have things end up not at all like we thought they would be.

But so far, things haven't been too bad. I've had many great experiences. I've had some very fun jobs. I've met many great people. I've made many great friends. And all the while I've been able to thank God for that.

Now that school is really over for me, and I have a month to contemplate the future before starting a summer job, I have time to think about what I really want to do. What is that and what does it look like? Because sometimes when you're in school and are (hopefully) training for it, it's pretty easy to get sidetracked and forget what it is. But does that really matter?

I think we're ultimately placed here on earth to serve God. And I'm looking forward to seeing and finding out what that looks like in my life.
